Method · Competitor selection

Track the apps that change a real decision.

A short competitor list is more useful than a category census. Select substitutes by merchant job, buying context and decision relevance.

Start with the decision

  1. 01Listing positioning: choose apps competing for the same merchant search intent
  2. 02Pricing: choose alternatives a prospect would compare during purchase
  3. 03Roadmap: choose products serving the same merchant workflow
  4. 04Support and onboarding: choose products with a similar implementation burden
  5. 05Market entry: choose the category leaders and one fast-moving newer entrant

Build the first set

  1. 01Add your own listing so the same public fields form a baseline
  2. 02Add two direct substitutes solving the same primary job
  3. 03Add one adjacent product merchants use instead of the workflow
  4. 04Add one category leader only if its positioning influences your buyers
  5. 05Write one sentence explaining why each app is watched

Reject weak comparisons

Do not add an app only because it appears in “more apps like this.” Reject products aimed at a different merchant size, a different job or a different purchase decision unless that adjacency is the reason for tracking it.

Review the watchlist monthly

  1. 01Remove an app when it no longer affects a current decision
  2. 02Keep historical evidence when a past comparison still matters
  3. 03Replace noisy apps with products repeatedly named by prospects or churned merchants
  4. 04Treat category and rating movement as observed context, not proof of demand
  5. 05Link roadmap or positioning decisions to the exact source row that prompted investigation

What not to infer

A competitor’s pricing, screenshots, rating or category position can change near your own acquisition or revenue movement without causing it. Use timing to decide what to inspect, then rely on your own merchant, attribution and revenue evidence for the commercial conclusion.
